Sub-Arctic Mission

The work of the Sub-Arctic Mission is centered in the region of the Great Slave Lake and Mackenzie River valley areas of the NWT and into the Kugluktuk region of Nunavut.

Beginning in 1949, mission work expanded from the settlement of Hay River to Fort Resolution, Fort Simpson, Tulita (Fort Norman), Fort Good Hope, Colville Lake, Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Pine Point (between Hay River and Fort Resolution) and then to Fort Smith.

It also expanded from Sunday school and church services and children's clubs to nursing stations and ultimately the H. H. Williams Memorial Hosprital, a fully-accredited active treatment facility.

The story of Ken and Sarah Gaetz appears in Sarah's new book, Wrapped in Furs, that spans the years when Hay River was their home, 1949-1980, and then over the many years since then as they returned to reconnect with families, friends and the communities in of the southern part of the NWT.

In her book you will meet many who became part of Sarah's experience of the North and that follows the intertwining of lives connected with the Sub-Arctic Mission over many decades.  Her story is one of faith, hope and charity that has sustained meaningful personal connections over the years.
