3. Rigorous Scholarship
In what ways can, and do, the UW Libraries support Rigorous Scholarship at the University?
A. The libraries currently offer top-notch collections that certainly can be ranked among the members of ARL.
B. The library created and now further develops the Wyoming Scholars Repository
The RRS Feed through the Scholar’s Repository to the Wyoming Law Review is impressive…
The Wyoming Law Review could serve as a model for future development of scholarly journals at UW.
C. The library has created a terrific institutional repository, UW-Digital-- one that is a model for others
(such as Digital CC at Colorado College).
D. But in what ways could UW Libraries expand its role in scholarly communication?
i. Currently there is an opening for a new Scholarly Communications Librarian
As this position is filled in due course, UW Libraries will be taken to the next level, I'm sure.
ii. Utilize Digital Commons for hosting additional scholarly online journals.
This initiative currently is underway at the University of Denver and Regis University.
There could be excellent regional synergy by creating a local interest group.
On this score at least, the stage is set for expansion in this aspect of scholarly communication.
I would be very interested in exploring this option at UW.
* My experience in creating and managing open access, scholarly online journals has been one of the most gratifying aspects of my work as a library dean and director.
i. Collaborative Librarianship
ii. Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Advantages of online scholarly publishing are quite compelling:
* Opportunities for international exposure (The numbers of view counts/down loads
can be astonishing)
* New avenues for faculty and administrative scholarship
* New opportunities for faculty and staff to become engaged in the processes of
scholarly communication (peer review, editing, etc.)
* Incredibly attractive business plan
* Remarkable scope of networking and range of influence
*I pulled together a team in 2007 and founded the journal in 2009
* Completed 7 volumes, 28 issues
* Peer reviewed and professional articles
* 550,000 views to date
* Less than $10,000 expended to date
* International scope
* Increasingly cited in the literature
* I pulled together a team at Regis and founded JHE in 2011.
* Published 4 years, 8 issues
* Over 150,000 views to date
* Less than $7,000 expended to date
