5. Stewardship

A further element of the mission of the University of Wyoming is to provide "responsible stewardship of Wyoming's cultural, historical and natural resources."

This is a broad and exciting field of opportunity for the UW Libraries.

What could this mean for the future?

A.  Of course, a priority would be to maintain and grow the fine collections of the University of Wyoming

Libraries.  (Library futures, one way or another always seem to come back to this!)

B. Expand the cultural content of UW's digital repositories.  (Again, this is pretty fundamental.)

This involves the curation and preservation or the written and other documentary treasures of

the University and the State of Wyoming.

C. Enhance the relationship with the American Heritage Center.

This could involve exploring partnerships with the Center in digital repository expansion and

                          in e-publishing, for instance.

                                     * About 6 or 8 years ago I attended a terrific event at the Coe Library where

                                            two notables made presentations --

Alan Simpson, esteemed Senator of Wyoming, and

James Billington, Librarian of Congress.  It would have been wonderful to

have a published record of their presentations, and more so because of

their interactions and banter.  Something may have been recorded, but I

could not find it. The library could help to ensure records are made and

                                                                access provided.

D. Support more fully University collections and resourses on campus related to sustainability.

At Coloarado College, this consistently is one of the top concerns of students.  And increasingly this

needs to be a top priorty of the University and Library.

In contributing to the article published a few weeks ago,

“Looking Ahead: Thought Leaders Forecast Trends in Higher Education,"

Stephen Mulkey, President of Unity College, ME, states,

“Teaching, learning and scholarship for sustainability must become the highest

priority in higher education.” In College Planning and Management 19/1 (2016), p. 15

E. Support and Advance the University of Wyoming's Archives and Special Collections

                        -  In obtaining, curating and preserving the historical memory of the University

                        -  In marketing its resources to the campus community and the State of Wyoming

                        -  In expanding its teaching and learning opportunities that enhance the University Mission.
