4. Technology Transfer
A. Current State pf Technology Transfer
This important and growing field of scholarship and research at universities pertains to a number of issues, including:
Intellectual Property
Copyright
Patents and Inventions
Start-ups and Innovations

A place like North Carolina State University leads in Technology Transfer, and with the remarkable new Hunt Library that was opened three years ago, it is well-positioned to partner with the University in this area.
B. Related Opportunities
By extension, Technology Tranfer relates to the use of technology in a creative, economical and sustainable ways. And again, the library could play an important role in this.
It could mean:
Open Source Programming
Essentially, this involves an investment not in proprietary computing but in human capital
to create and develop open source technology for the benefit of the teaching/learning community
and ultimately the larger community.
* UW Libraries already does this to some extent
Creation of the digital repository on the Islandora/Discovery Garden platform.
Development of App-based library services
At Colorado College we are developing Apps for
seamless access to the catalog and other digital resources
access to some library services (theses submissions)
Create App access to various modes of library instruction -- Why not?
Use of technology to broaden greatly the outreach of the UW Libraries to non-university
communities could include:
Expanded database access to certain collections of
popular literature, magazines and other information
eg. OJ 24x7. While this initiative at Regis failed due to
personnel changes, the principle still remains viable.
Create topical libraries of open access materials
When it comes to the use of technology by the academic library, the possibilities are enormous, limited perhaps by personnel resources and funding -- but the these can be overcome incrementally as priorities are established.
A University library does not need a "fancy-pants" new facility like the Hunt Library (left) to partner with an Office of Technology Transfer.
Any research library could assist in creating
resource pages,
information dissemination tools,
guides,
and other tools to promote TT services.
Librarians could provide expertise on copyright and intellectual property issues.
